What is Autism?

Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that affects social interactions, communication, and behavior. The term “spectrum” reflects the wide variation in challenges and strengths possessed by each person with autism, making each individual’s experience unique. ASD is characterized by:

  • Unique social interactions: Individuals may have difficulty with social cues, prefer solitary activities, or engage differently with peers.
  • Differences in communication: Both verbal and non-verbal communication can be affected. Some individuals experience speech delay creating difficulties in expressing themselves or understanding others.
  • Repetitive behaviors and routines: These may include repetitive movements, adherence to routines, or a strong need for predictability.
  • Sensory sensitivities: Individuals with ASD may be hypersensitive or hyposensitive to sensory stimuli such as light, sound, touch, and pain.

Early signs of Autism can vary widely among individuals, but there are common indicators to look out for, especially in young children. A diagnosis can be made before 2 years of age when symptoms are very prominent. These signs include:

  • Lack of eye contact or response to name.
  • Delayed speech or language development.
  • Minimal interest in social interactions or playing with peers.
  • Repetitive movements or speech patterns.
  • Unusual reactions to sensory experiences, such as aversion to certain sounds or textures.

Diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) involves a comprehensive evaluation process, it may require assessments from multiple healthcare professionals. Establishing intervention at a young age is crucial for optimal outcomes. Key steps in the diagnosis include:

  • Developmental screenings during regular pediatric check-ups.
  • Observation of behavior and interaction patterns.
  • Interviews or questionnaires for parents and caregivers to detail the child’s developmental history and behavior are valuable for diagnosing correctly.
  • Traditionally comprehensive diagnostic evaluations by developmental-behavioral pediatricians, neurologists, or psychologists were required. More recently some pediatricians are diagnosing children in the primary care setting.

Our Approach to Treating ASD

Reagan’s Clinic understands that ASD requires a coordinated treatment plan with your physician, therapists, schools, insurance, and other community resources. We want to tailor the treatment plan to the child’s needs and the family’s priorities and available resources. Our treatment philosophy includes:

  • Comprehensive Evaluation: We review the medical, developmental, social, and behavioral history, including prior assessments. Future assessments are recommended as conditions evolve.
  • Individualized Treatment Plans: Based on the evaluation, we design a personalized treatment plan that may include behavioral therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and support for educational and social needs based on the strengths and challenges identified.
  • Family Support and Involvement: Families play a critical role, we help navigate their journey by educating and identifying available resources.
  • Collaborative Care: We work with schools, therapists, and other professionals involved in the child’s care to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive approach is implemented.

We follow evidence-based practices to support individuals with autism and their families. An individual’s plan may include:

  • Speech and Language Therapy: Targeted interventions to improve communication, expressive language, and social interaction.
  • Occupational Therapy (OT): OT addresses sensory sensitivities, fine motor skills, and daily living activities.
  • Behavioral Therapy: Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) is a strategy used to eliminate unwanted behaviors or initiate new behaviors. It can also be used to facilitate other therapy goals.
  • Individualized Education Plans (IEPs): Collaborating with schools to create tailored educational plans for children with ASD.
